The 22nd Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) was held today 28th of February 2017 in Islamabad, Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The council was attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Turkey, and the representatives of the other ECO member countries. The 22nd Council of Minister was chaired by Mr. Sartaj Aziz, Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
On behalf of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Dr. Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal, President’s special envoy and Afghanistan ambassador to Pakistan led the Afghan delegation to the meeting.
The Council finalized the 13th ECO Summit declaration, the ECO VISION 2025 and the ECO Budget 2017 and approved the ECO Vision 2025 and the ECO Calendar of events 2017, which were technically reviewed during the two days senior officials meeting of the ECO member countries.
Dr. Zakhilwal, delivered his country statement in which he reiterated on the important role of ECO and other regional organizations in expanding regional economic integration, bringing peace and stability in the region.
He shared many of the challenges in the ECO region, which require collective action. He said that in order to unlock our individual potentials, we need to reshape our policies that promote peace, stability and trust building as core objectives.
Dr. Zakhilwal emphasized that Regional Economic Cooperation is a top priority for the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and gave assurance of Afghanistan’s Government commitment toward peace, stability and economic prosperity in the ECO region.
