In his speech at the ceremony, the President said: commemorating Ashura is celebrating justice and taking a stance against oppression; the message of Imam Hussain’s revolution is global and all the world needs to hear this message because justice, reforms and resistance are enduring.
President Ghani added: justice forms the foundation of Islam and the message of Imam Hussain and Ashura for the free people of Afghanistan is a message of justice and equality before the law. We are all equal and that is why today all the Muslim people of Afghanistan commemorate this great day.
He said: we should not allow and fight every form of violence and extremism as extremism is like theft which steals the future of our children, women and country and it means abandoning the principles which have guided us for the last 1400 years.
The President welcomed blood donation on Ashura, and said that all of us need to make blood a means for life, especially for the National Security and Defense Forces who like Hussain (RA) resist in hot fronts for the defense of our dignity, honor, independence and territorial integrity of the country.
President Ghani underscored that the government of Afghanistan is committed to defending the sanctity of Ashura and revive the ancient mourning tradition in its best and most rational form. He called on the honorable Muslim people of Afghanistan to commemorate this historic day in a way that brings unity and solidarity.
The President said that behaving like Hussain requires that we understand his life from the depth of our hearts and act on it accordingly.
Besides the President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, present in the ceremony were second vice president Mohammad Sarwar Danish, the President’s extraordinary representative for reforms and good governance, National Security Advisor Hanif Atmar, former second vice president Mohammad Karim Khalili as well as a number of cabinet ministers and members of parliament.
