Deputy Foreign Minister Receives SAARC Secretary General

H. E. Hekmat Khalil Karzai, Deputy Foreign Minister met with Amjad Hussain B. Sial Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in his office.

At the outset of the meeting, the two sides discussed a broad range of issues, such as Afghanistan’s role in SAARC, strengthening the basis of cooperation among the member countries, prioritizing programs, regional connectivity and the future perspective of SAARC.

Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan emphasized that significant regional issues, such as combating terrorism and extremism that have become a serious challenge and threat to the security of the region and Afghanistan should be included on the working agenda of the SAARC.  

During the meeting, Mr. Karzai assured SAARC’s Secretary General of the continuing support of Afghanistan with respect to promoting cooperation and regional connectivity among the SAARC member countries reiterating that Kabul will endeavor to play a constructive role regarding the future of the above-mentioned organization.

Mr. Sial, who has assumed his position as the new Secretary-General of SAARC on the 1st of March 2017, is visiting Kabul for the purpose of paying a series of courtesy calls to the high ranking Afghan officials, including the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Chief Executive and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
