Deputy Foreign Minister Meets Iranian Ambassador

Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Ershad Ahmadi met with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Mohammad Reza Bahrami this afternoon.

Two sides held discussions and exchanged views on various issues such as the visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, His Excellency Hamid Karzai, to the Islamic Republic of Iran in the near future and Afghan Government concern about the recent statement of the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mr. Rahimpour.

Referring to the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Mr. Rahimpour’s comments regarding the elections and signing of the Bilateral Security and Defense Agreement with the United States, Mr. Ahmadi Said, “ As we have not expressed our views on internal affairs of other countries, we expect them to observe accepted principles and norms as well”.

Mr. Ahmadi also added that Afghanistan would like to have better relations with all countries including the Islamic Republic of Iran and in building relations with the world, Afghanistan keeps the national interests in mind and makes decisions independently.

Deputy Foreign Minister added that Afghan Government will consider the consultations of the representatives of People in the Consultative Loya Jirga in connection to the agreement with the United States and as it is clear from its provisions, this agreement will not pose any threat to one neighbors.

Mr. Bahrami did not consider Mr.Rahimpour’s statement as the view and stance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and stated that the comment on Afghan elections was not part of the interview and the journalist who conducted this interview modified his words and published them in the media. He committed to share this matter with the authorities of his country.
