Passport Extension

The Embassy of Afghanistan in London may extend passports of Afghans residing in, and applying from the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. Under current regulations, the Embassy can only extend ordinary passports. Under exceptional circumstances, the Consular Section of the Embassy may also extend the validity of service or student passports.

Applications that are incomplete and/or are missing necessary documentation and/or information will not be processed and the fee is not refundable.

To apply for a passport extension, the following are required:

  • The applicant must be present when applying for a passport extension.
  • Appointment: Please ensure that the appointment is booked ONLINE prior to the arrival of the applicant.
  • Complete and duly signed passport extension application form. Application forms are available in three languages (Dari, Pashto and English) and can be accessed from the application forms section below.
  • Submission of the current passport. The passport must have available space for extension on specified pages, otherwise extension is not possible.

Passports can be extended for a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 2 years (The distribution of ePassports begin soon). Please be aware that some countries may not issue a visa on passports that are more than 10 years old. Therefore, we would recommend that you check with the relevant embassies before you plan your travel.

Note: It is your responsibility to bring in your passport for extension prior to the date of expiry. Additional to extension fees, fines may also apply, should the passport not be extended on time. In some cases, we may also ask for additional documents.

Applications from Republic of Ireland

Applicants applying from the Republic of Ireland must meet all the above requirements (except the online booking of appointment). However, they do not have to apply in person.

Applicants must send the above documents and the correct fees (postal order) for their application by post and, additionally, enclose separate postal order of £10.00 for the postal cost of returning the documents by Recorded Delivery.

The decision to grant a passport extension will be made based on an interview (via Skype), to verify the applicant’s identity. Upon receipt of applications, applicants are contacted by telephone and informed of their interview details.

Please note that applications from Republic of Ireland may sometimes take up to 4 weeks to be processed. In some cases, applicants may also be requested to provide additional documents.
