A delegation of Afghan female Parliamentarians participated in a four-day workshop organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK Branch (CPA UK) from Monday 7 to Wednesday 9th of July 2014. Mrs Shukriya Barakzai, Mrs. Najia Babakerkhil, Mrs. Fatima Nazari, Mrs. Samia Azizi, Mrs. Maryam Kofi, and Mrs. Kubra Mostafavi are members of the Afghan Parliament who have attended the workshop. Thirty five women parliamentarians from South Asia namely Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Maldives also participated in the Workshop discussing the role they can play in promoting the rights of women both within their Parliaments and constituencies.
The Afghan female Parliamentarians actively engaged in discussions at this workshop and they reflected on tremendous achievements Afghanistan has had on women’s rights over the last decade and urged the international community to fulfill their commitments towards women in Afghanistan. Mrs.Nazifa Haqpal, Second Secretary in-charge of Women and Human Rights issues at Embassy of Afghanistan in London accompanied the delegation during the program.
The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in London, Dr. Mohammad Daud Yaar, accompanied the Afghan Delegation in the opening day of the workshop, which was held in the House of the Parliament.
This event was the fourth workshop in a series of programs aimed at strengthening the role of Parliamentarians in the legislatures and broadening the understanding of the issues impacting on women parliamentarians.
